Professional Development Grant Program (Portland)

The Professional Development Grant Program assists artists or representatives of arts organizations with opportunities that specifically improve their business management skills and/or help advance the careers of the individual artist or the arts administrator by supporting expenses related to specific, unique opportunities that have potential to significantly impact an individual’s work and professional development. An opportunity may be one of many things, but it must clearly demonstrate how the proposal will benefit the organization or individual long-term.

Unlike grant programs that support the creation of new work, this program does not ask panelists to critique the applicant’s previous work. Instead, reviewers must determine from the application: (1) whether the opportunity is unique, and not a repetition of the applicant’s similar, previous experiences; (2) whether the applicant has made the case that this opportunity is timely and has true potential to positively impact their career or organization.

Artists who are current residents of Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington counties and who meet the eligibility criteria are eligible to apply.

Portland Regional Arts & Culture Council Artist Fellowship

The Regional Arts & Culture Council of Portland, Oregon, is restoring its Artist Fellowship program and will honor one extraordinary artist in the performing arts (dance, movement, music, or theater) with a $20,000 fellowship this spring.

RACC established the Artist Fellowship program in 1999 to honor and support uniquely talented local artists who have contributed to the community in meaningful ways. The accompanying cash award allows the selected artist to explore a particular project or enhance his or her artistic process. Fellowships are awarded annually in rotating disciplines that include performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and literature. RACC did not award a fellowship in 2009 because of the unstable economic climate.

Review criteria include proof of sustained high artistic quality in the applicant's work as well as evidence of the applicant's involvement in the community and the importance of his or her work to the local culture. Artists who are current residents of Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington counties and who meet the eligibility criteria are eligible to apply.

International Ibsen Scholarships

Initiated by the Norwegian government, the International Ibsen Scholarships will be awarded for a third time in 2010. The scholarships are designed to encourage critical discourse in regards to existential and society-related subject matters concerning Henrik Ibsen. Scholarship funds are available to individuals, organizations, or institutions within the artistic and cultural communities around the world.

Princess Grace Foundation Fellowships

The Princess Grace Foundation-USA has announced the availability of applications for the 2010 Princess Grace Awards in theater, playwriting, dance performance, choreography, and film. Founded in 1982 in memory of Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco, the foundation identifies and assists emerging artists in theater, dance, and film and has awarded grants in excess of $7 million to nearly five hundred individuals nationwide.

Theater awards take the form of scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships. Grants are awarded based on the quality of the emerging artist's past work, his/her potential for future excellence, and the impact the collaboration between the nominating organization and the artist will have on the individual's artistic growth. The Playwriting Award includes a residency at New Dramatists, Inc. and the opportunity for the winning play to be licensed and published by Samuel French, Inc. (Deadline: March 31, 2010.)

Dance performance awards take the form of scholarships and fellowships. Awards are based on the applicant's artistic merit, significance of the award to current artistic development, and the potential for future excellence and impact on the field. Choreography awards offer emerging choreographers the opportunity to create a new work with organizations with which they have little experience. (Deadline: April 30, 2010.)

Access to Artistic Excellence (NEA)

Access to Artistic Excellence encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves our diverse cultural heritage, and makes the arts more widely available in communities throughout the country. Particularly relevant at this time are projects that demonstrate innovation by generating new forms of art making, new directions in the field, and/or innovative uses of creative resources. This category supports projects that provide short-term arts exposure or arts appreciation for children and youth as well as intergenerational education projects.

Amount: $150,000

Jazz for Peace Grants

JAZZ FOR PEACE has performed over 650 Benefit Concerts to raise funds, publicity and awareness for outstanding organizations in need worldwide. In addition Jazz for Peace performs educational programs bringing music and Jazz back into the schools and donates musical instruments to underprivileged children. Funds may be requested for general operating support, start-up costs, capital, project/program support, and technical assistance.

Contemporary Music Grant (France)

The French American Fund for Contemporary Music supports contemporary music projects — commissions, residencies, performances, tours, and master classes — that foster cultural exchange between France and the United States. Only projects involving works by living composers or works composed during the last 50 years will be considered for funding. The repertoire should fall within one of the following categories: contemporary music for classical instrumentation; computer-assisted composition and research with multi-media tools; and new forms of improvised and electronic music. Special consideration will be given to projects involving the commission of new works.
